Testing Key Performance Indicators

I often speak about the importance of building a well structured and comprehensive strength and conditioning program that attacks all the necessary physical qualities that will build a more well rounded athlete. A program that addresses the individual goals, needs, and wants of the athlete and how it relates to their long-term success by staying healthy and performing at higher levels year after year to gain the competitive advantage. In order for this to take place we need to determine the proper starting point for the athlete based on their current physical status, goals, training experience, and injury history among several other factors like key performance indicators.

Key performance indicators determine where the athlete is in terms of their mobility, strength, speed, agility, power, and conditioning levels. All these physical components that make up a well rounded strength and conditioning program. If we don’t test these KPI’s, then we’re just guessing and we don’t know which direction we need to go with athletes to make improvements. The ability to test KPI’s give us a baseline for physical performance and the ability to track and monitor progress and make necessary adjustments in programming, especially when the desired outcome we’re chasing isn’t working as effectively as we would like.

Our goal is to chase the right methods that will yield the improvements on the field. If we are not testing KPI’s, we are missing opportunities to track and monitor progress, make adjustments in programming, and drive intent and competition during training that will lead to greater outcomes in performance.

In the following newsletter we’ll discuss some of the specific KPIs we use to test athletic performance, the importance of them, and how it relates to and transfers to athletic performance on the field.
